Saudi Arabia’s App-Based Taxi Sector Sees Huge Earnings, Drives SAR 1.1 Billion Revenue for Local Drivers

App-Based Taxi Industry Generates SAR 1.1 Billion for Saudi Drivers in Early 2024

During the first nine months of 2024, Saudi Arabia’s digital ride-hailing market flourished, generating an impressive SAR 1.1 billion in earnings for Saudi drivers. According to the Transport General Authority (TGA), this increase comes as demand for app-based transportation continues to grow across Saudi cities and towns.

With 51.8 million trips completed between January and September, the sector saw a 12% rise in trips compared to last year. The third quarter marked a particularly strong growth period, with a 41% increase over the second quarter, highlighting the rising reliance on these platforms as the Kingdom’s preferred mode of transport.

Regional Demand Patterns: Riyadh Leads, Followed by Makkah and Eastern Province

Among Saudi cities, Riyadh had the highest number of app-based rides, making up 39% of the total, followed by Makkah with 25%, and the Eastern Province with 16%. This trend underscores the need for accessible, modern transport solutions in urban areas where traditional commuting can be challenging.

Currently, 46 registered transport apps operate within Saudi Arabia’s passenger transport industry. These apps offer flexibility, reliability, and convenience, catering to a range of travel needs while helping alleviate city congestion and reduce travel times.

Encouraging Saudi Youth Participation in Ride-Hailing

Seeing the vast potential, the TGA is encouraging Saudi youth to join the transport sector, recommending them to seek financial support from the Human Resources Development Fund (HADAF) to cover costs and increase employability within this high-demand industry. This initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader economic development goals by offering young Saudis the chance to secure flexible, well-paying roles within an expanding tech-driven sector.

With competitive earnings and adaptable work schedules, this emerging employment pathway offers Saudi nationals an opportunity to play a key role in modernizing the Kingdom’s transport landscape. As demand continues to grow, the app-based transport sector stands as a promising avenue for economic participation and growth for Saudi drivers.
