EO-1: Pakistan’s First Homegrown Satellite Soars into Space

SUPARCO Makes History

Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has launched the country’s first fully indigenous Electro-Optical (EO-1) satellite, a monumental step for the nation’s space ambitions. The launch was conducted at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in China, with a live telecast from SUPARCO’s Karachi complex, allowing citizens to share in the momentous occasion.

What EO-1 Brings to the Table

The EO-1 satellite is a game-changer for Pakistan, equipped to:

  • Track Natural Disasters: Delivering real-time data to aid in disaster response and management.
  • Monitor the Environment: Offering insights into changing environmental conditions such as deforestation and urbanization.
  • Enhance Agriculture: Providing detailed data on crop health, soil conditions, and weather trends.

This satellite also contributes to national security by enabling real-time surveillance capabilities.

Building on PAKSAT MM1’s Success

EO-1’s launch follows the success of PAKSAT MM1, Pakistan’s first multi-mission satellite, launched in May 2024. Positioned at 36,000 kilometers above Earth, PAKSAT MM1 is known for its state-of-the-art communication technology, which supports faster internet, robust e-governance, and increased e-commerce activities.

A Vision of Self-Reliance

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his congratulatory address, emphasized the role of indigenous satellite technology in boosting Pakistan’s technological self-sufficiency and economic progress.

As Pakistan celebrates EO-1’s launch, the satellite stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to innovation, research, and development in the space sector.
