All Airports in Pakistan to Go Cashless in Major Digital Transformation
Pakistan is taking a major step toward a digital future — the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced that all airports across the country will soon become fully cashless, marking a historic transformation in the nation’s aviation and financial sectors.
Under this initiative, passengers and airport staff will be able to access all services — from parking and check-in to dining and shopping — using digital payment methods, completely eliminating the need for cash transactions.
The move comes as part of a broader government push to expand digital financial inclusion and strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy.
According to officials, the PAA will roll out QR code-based payment systems across all airport facilities in collaboration with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). This integration will ensure smooth, secure, and transparent transactions, while also reducing risks associated with cash handling.
A senior PAA official stated that the project aims to “modernize passenger experience while aligning Pakistan’s airports with international standards of digital convenience.”
The cashless model will be introduced in phases, beginning with major airports such as Islamabad International Airport, Jinnah International Airport (Karachi), and Allama Iqbal International Airport (Lahore). Smaller regional airports will follow once the infrastructure is fully in place.
This shift is also expected to help authorities improve financial monitoring, reduce corruption, and boost operational efficiency, ensuring that all transactions are recorded digitally in real time.
Industry experts have hailed the initiative as a milestone for Pakistan’s digital transformation, emphasizing that airports often serve as gateways to the country’s global image — and digitizing their payment systems sends a strong signal of progress and modernization.
Digital payment adoption has accelerated rapidly in Pakistan, fueled by the growth of platforms such as Raast, Easypaisa, and JazzCash, alongside increased usage of debit and credit cards. The PAA’s plan to make airports cashless is seen as a natural extension of this nationwide digital momentum.
As the rollout begins, passengers are encouraged to shift to digital payment options, ensuring a smoother and faster travel experience in line with global aviation standards.
