PM Shehbaz Directs Easier Credit Access for SMEs and Small Farmers

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for easier access to credit for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and small farmers, emphasizing the government’s commitment to private sector-led growth and economic inclusion. During a high-level meeting, the premier outlined measures to simplify loan procedures and expand financial support to foster entrepreneurship and agricultural productivity.

The meeting reviewed current credit facilitation initiatives and economic inclusion programs, with a focus on enabling new SMEs and small farmers to access financing more efficiently. The prime minister stressed that improving credit access is essential for sustainable economic development and the growth of Pakistan’s private sector.

Highlighting efforts by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), PM Sharif noted that procedural simplifications have been introduced to reduce bureaucratic hurdles. He instructed authorities to ensure that these reforms result in tangible relief for borrowers, particularly those adopting modern agricultural practices and technologies to boost productivity and incomes.

The prime minister also directed nationwide consultations to create a comprehensive SME policy. Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar, along with a dedicated team, will visit all provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, to coordinate with provincial authorities. The aim is to develop a unified strategy that strengthens small- and medium-scale businesses across the country.

Small farmers were highlighted as a key focus for future credit expansion, with priority given to service providers promoting innovation in agriculture. PM Sharif emphasized that SMEs are the backbone of the economy and essential for job creation and industrial growth, drawing parallels with developed economies.

The meeting also stressed youth entrepreneurship, encouraging training programs that equip young people with skills and access to finance. The prime minister underscored that empowering entrepreneurs and supporting SMEs is central to Pakistan’s long-term economic strategy.
