Here’s How Much Pakistani Athletes Earned in Government Cash Prizes
The federal government has disbursed a total of Rs. 206.45 million in cash awards to Pakistani athletes for their outstanding performances during the 2024–25 fiscal year, according to official details presented in parliament.
The figures highlight the scale of financial recognition provided to athletes who represented Pakistan at major international sporting events, reflecting the government’s incentive-based approach to rewarding excellence in sports.
National javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem emerged as the highest recipient of government cash prizes during the period. Official documents show that he received Rs. 152 million for his historic achievements, making up the majority of the total disbursed amount.
Arshad’s coach, Salman Iqbal Butt, was also rewarded for his role in the athlete’s success. He received Rs. 10.6 million, underscoring the government’s recognition of coaching staff who contribute to elite-level performances.
The remaining prize money was distributed among other athletes from different sports disciplines who achieved podium finishes or notable results in international competitions. These rewards were granted under existing government sports incentive policies.
According to officials, the cash prizes are intended to motivate athletes, encourage youth participation in sports, and help players focus fully on training without financial stress. The awards are also seen as a tool to promote Pakistan’s image internationally through sporting success.
Government sources stated that prize amounts are determined based on the level of competition, the nature of the achievement, and international standards. Olympic and world-level performances receive significantly higher rewards compared to regional events.
Parliamentary records show that sports federations coordinate with the Pakistan Sports Board to verify performances before prize disbursement. This process aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the allocation of public funds.
In recent years, calls have increased for sustained investment beyond one-time cash rewards. Sports analysts argue that while prize money boosts morale, long-term development requires funding for facilities, coaching, and grassroots programs.
Arshad Nadeem’s success has frequently been cited as an example of how targeted support can produce world-class results. His achievements have renewed discussions around expanding structured athlete development programs across the country.
Officials have indicated that future sports policies may focus more on performance-based funding, athlete welfare, and post-retirement support, alongside cash incentives.
The disclosure of these figures has generated strong public interest, with many praising the recognition of athletes’ hard work, while others continue to urge broader reforms to strengthen Pakistan’s sports ecosystem.
