KP Government Holds Assembly Session at Cricket Stadium in Unprecedented Move

In a rare and symbolic move, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government convened a provincial assembly session at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium in Peshawar. The session began at 3 PM, marking a historic departure from traditional legislative venues.

Officials described the decision as unprecedented in the province’s parliamentary history. Holding the session in a public and open space reflects an effort to enhance transparency and bring governance closer to the people.

The move was initiated following an announcement by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who revealed during a public gathering in Mardan that the assembly sitting would be shifted to an खुले venue. The decision quickly gained attention for its unconventional approach to legislative proceedings.

Before finalizing the plan, Speaker Babar Saleem Swati held consultations with Opposition Leader Dr. Ibad and other parliamentary representatives. This collaborative process ensured that the decision had cross-party input, adding legitimacy to the initiative.

The session at the stadium not only drew political interest but also highlighted a broader message of accessibility and public engagement. By moving away from the traditional assembly building, the government aimed to create a more inclusive environment for democratic processes.

Observers note that such steps could redefine how legislative sessions are perceived in Pakistan, potentially encouraging greater citizen awareness and participation. However, questions remain about whether this will become a recurring practice or remain a one-time symbolic gesture.

This development underscores evolving political strategies in Pakistan, where public outreach and visibility are becoming increasingly important. It also reflects a willingness by provincial leadership to experiment with new formats in governance.
