Construction of Multan–Lodhran Dual Carriageway to Begin Next Month After Federal Approval
The federal government has given the green light for the long-awaited dualization of the Multan–Lodhran Road, with construction work expected to commence next month. The infrastructure project is aimed at improving road safety, easing traffic congestion, and strengthening transportation links across South Punjab.
The approval was granted by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan following a request submitted by Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani. The decision marks a significant step toward upgrading one of the region’s key road corridors.
The Multan–Lodhran Road stretches approximately 62 kilometres and serves as an important route for commuters, commercial transport, and agricultural traffic. Once upgraded into a dual carriageway, the road is expected to improve travel efficiency while reducing the risk of accidents caused by heavy traffic on the existing single-lane route.
According to official details, the project carries an estimated cost of Rs. 4.6 billion. The entire scheme will be financed through the Road Maintenance Account (RMA), ensuring that funding is available for the timely execution of the development work.
The road expansion project is expected to deliver multiple economic and social benefits for South Punjab. Improved road infrastructure will facilitate smoother movement of goods between Multan, Lodhran, and surrounding districts, supporting local businesses, agriculture, and trade activities.
Residents of the region have long demanded the dualization of the highway due to increasing traffic volume and safety concerns. The project is anticipated to provide a safer driving experience while significantly reducing travel time for thousands of daily commuters.
The government’s approval reflects its continued focus on modernizing Pakistan’s transport network through strategic infrastructure investments. Upgraded road connectivity not only enhances regional mobility but also contributes to economic growth by improving access to markets, industries, and public services.
With construction scheduled to begin next month, the Multan–Lodhran dual carriageway is expected to become another important addition to Pakistan’s expanding highway network. Once completed, the project will play a key role in supporting transportation and development across South Punjab.
