Pakistan Fuel Sales Rebound 10% in October 2026 Despite Annual Decline

Pakistan’s petroleum sector recorded a notable recovery in October 2026, as oil marketing companies (OMCs) reported a 10 percent month-on-month increase in total fuel sales. The improvement indicates stronger demand compared with September, although overall consumption remains slightly below the level recorded during the same month last year.

According to industry data compiled by Arif Habib Limited, total petroleum product sales reached 1.48 million tons in October 2026, compared with 1.35 million tons in September. The monthly increase reflects an improvement in fuel consumption across the country’s petroleum market.

Despite this recovery, total industry sales remained 1 percent lower year-on-year, suggesting that Pakistan’s fuel market continues to face demand-related challenges. Higher petroleum prices and pressure on household purchasing power remain important factors influencing consumption patterns.

The figures present a mixed picture for Pakistan’s energy sector. While the monthly recovery offers some encouragement for oil marketing companies, the annual decline indicates that demand has yet to fully regain its previous strength.

Excluding furnace oil, petroleum product sales declined by 5.9 percent year-on-year in October. However, sales in this category increased by 10.3 percent compared with September, highlighting an improvement in monthly consumption.

The annual decline was primarily associated with weaker demand for petrol and diesel. Higher fuel prices have affected consumers and businesses, encouraging more careful spending on transportation and other fuel-dependent activities.

Petrol and diesel are essential for Pakistan’s transportation system, commercial activities and industrial operations. Changes in their consumption can therefore provide useful indications of broader economic conditions, including mobility, business activity and consumer purchasing power.

The increase in monthly fuel sales could also reflect improved market activity compared with September. However, the available figures do not establish a single reason for the recovery, and the annual comparison suggests that affordability remains a concern.

Another encouraging development emerged from the cumulative sales figures for the first four months of the ongoing fiscal year 2026-27.

According to the data, total petroleum product sales reached 5.59 million tons during July-October FY27. This represents a 4 percent increase compared with 5.39 million tons recorded during the corresponding four-month period of the previous fiscal year.

The cumulative growth suggests that the petroleum market has maintained a positive overall trend during the opening months of FY27, even as individual monthly figures continue to show fluctuations.

For oil marketing companies, changes in petroleum consumption are particularly important because sales volumes influence business performance, inventory requirements and distribution operations. A sustained recovery could provide support to companies operating across Pakistan’s fuel supply network.

However, the industry’s future performance will depend on several factors, including international oil prices, domestic petroleum rates, economic activity and consumer demand.

Pakistan’s petroleum market remains closely connected to broader economic developments. Any significant change in fuel prices can influence transportation expenses, business operating costs and the prices of goods and services.

The October figures therefore highlight both the improvement in monthly fuel consumption and the continuing challenges facing Pakistan’s petroleum industry. Although sales increased compared with September, the year-on-year decline indicates that a stronger and more sustainable recovery will depend on improved affordability and overall economic conditions.
