The Punjab government has expanded its Apni Chhat Apna Ghar (ACAG) program by introducing interest-free loans for homeowners looking to renovate unsafe houses or construct additional floors. The initiative aims to improve housing conditions across the province while reducing the risks posed by aging and structurally weak buildings.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced the new measures during a review meeting, highlighting the government’s commitment to ensuring safer living conditions for residents. The decision comes in the wake of the recent building collapse in Kahna, which underscored the dangers associated with deteriorating residential structures.

Under the expanded ACAG program, eligible homeowners will be able to receive interest-free loans of up to Rs. 500,000 to repair and renovate old or damaged houses. The financial assistance is intended to help families strengthen their homes without facing the burden of high borrowing costs.

In addition to renovation support, the government will also provide interest-free loans of up to Rs. 1 million for constructing an additional floor on existing homes. The measure is expected to help families requiring extra living space while encouraging safer and properly planned residential expansion.

The Punjab government believes that improving existing housing stock is just as important as building new homes. Many families continue to live in aging structures that require urgent repairs, but financial constraints often delay necessary maintenance, increasing the risk of accidents and structural failures.
