Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed authorities to speed up work under the Model Village Project, with a focus on improving drainage and sewerage systems in rural areas across the province.

The directive was issued during a special meeting chaired by the chief minister to review progress on the Model Village Project and assess development activities taking place in villages across Punjab.

Officials briefed the meeting that development work is currently underway in more than 3,500 villages. The projects include the construction of sewerage and drainage systems as well as brick-paved streets to improve basic infrastructure for rural communities.

The initiative aims to address long-standing infrastructure problems faced by residents in villages, particularly issues related to wastewater disposal, poor drainage and inadequate road conditions.

Improved drainage systems can help rural communities manage rainwater and wastewater more effectively. Proper sewerage infrastructure can also contribute to cleaner residential areas and improve overall public hygiene.

The construction of brick-paved streets is another major component of the development programme. Better streets are expected to make transportation easier for residents while improving access for emergency services, pedestrians and local businesses.

Maryam Nawaz has emphasized the need for faster implementation so that residents can benefit from the projects without unnecessary delays. Authorities have been instructed to maintain progress and ensure that development activities remain focused on the needs of rural communities.

The Model Village Project represents an effort to improve basic municipal facilities beyond Punjab’s major urban centres. Rural areas often face infrastructure gaps compared with cities, particularly in drainage, sanitation, roads and other essential services.
