Punjab Confirms Basant 2027 Dates as Lahore Prepares for New Safety Rules

Punjab has officially announced the dates for Basant 2027, with Lahore scheduled to celebrate the traditional kite-flying festival from March 12 to March 14, 2027. The provincial government is also introducing rooftop safety requirements to reduce risks and ensure that celebrations take place in safer conditions.

According to Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi, residents and property owners must complete essential rooftop safety measures before the festival. The deadline for installing protective walls and completing necessary repairs has been set for December 31, 2026.

Under the announced requirements, rooftops must have protective walls or parapets at least 3.5 feet high. The measure is intended to improve safety for people participating in Basant, particularly those gathering on rooftops to fly kites and watch the festivities.

Qazi shared the details during a meeting focused on festival preparations and public safety. Officials discussed arrangements designed to reduce potential accidents and ensure that buildings used for kite flying meet the required safety standards.

Authorities have also made it clear that kite flying will not be permitted on unsafe rooftops or buildings. Property owners at approved locations must repair damaged roofs, parapets and stairways before the deadline.

These requirements place responsibility on building owners to ensure that their properties are suitable for public gatherings and festival activities. Rooftops with inadequate protective barriers or unresolved structural issues could be excluded from permitted kite-flying activities.

The December 31, 2026, deadline gives residents several weeks to inspect their properties and complete the necessary work before Basant preparations intensify. Property owners are expected to address safety concerns in advance rather than waiting until the festival approaches.

Basant is traditionally associated with colourful kites, seasonal celebrations and gatherings across Lahore. The festival has long held cultural significance in Punjab, attracting interest from residents and visitors who look forward to its distinctive atmosphere.

However, safety concerns have remained an important consideration in discussions about kite flying and large public celebrations. Rooftop falls, unsafe buildings and hazards associated with kite-flying activities can create risks for participants and the wider public.

The latest announcement indicates that rooftop inspections and compliance with safety requirements will be important parts of the preparations for Basant 2027. Restricting kite flying at unsafe locations is intended to prevent avoidable accidents while allowing activities at approved sites to proceed under the announced conditions.

Residents planning to participate should check their rooftops for damaged structures, ensure protective walls meet the specified height and arrange repairs well before the deadline. They should also follow any additional instructions issued by the relevant authorities as the festival dates approach.

With Basant scheduled for March 12–14, 2027, Lahore has a defined timeline for preparing buildings and addressing safety concerns. Further implementation details and any additional festival-related restrictions will depend on official guidance from the Punjab government.

For now, the key requirements are clear: Basant 2027 is scheduled for March 12 to March 14, rooftop protective walls must be at least 3.5 feet high, and required safety improvements must be completed by December 31, 2026. These measures will form an important part of Lahore’s preparations for the upcoming festival.
