Human Trafficking Under Spotlight as PM Orders Immediate Action

PM Shehbaz Sharif Demands Swift Action Against Traffickers

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed law enforcement agencies to take decisive measures against human trafficking networks, which continue to damage Pakistan’s global reputation. Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday, he expressed deep concern over the recent capsizing of a boat in Greece, which claimed several Pakistani lives.

Addressing Previous Oversights

PM Sharif criticized the failure to act decisively against traffickers following a similar incident last year, where 262 Pakistani nationals lost their lives. He highlighted that the recurrence of such tragedies reflects a lack of effective deterrence.

Technology-Driven Solutions with IBMS

To counter human trafficking, the premier emphasized the urgent need to implement the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS). This advanced system will help monitor international travel and identify illegal movements, offering a data-driven approach to tackling the issue.

Briefing and Statistics

During the meeting, officials revealed that 174 individuals involved in trafficking had been brought to justice, with four receiving convictions. However, the PM called for a more aggressive crackdown and demanded a detailed report on the incidents from the past year.

Public Awareness and International Partnerships

The prime minister instructed the FIA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to amplify public awareness campaigns highlighting the dangers of human trafficking. He also urged enhanced collaboration with international organizations to prevent such incidents in the future.

Key Officials in Attendance

The meeting saw participation from federal ministers such as Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Ahad Cheema, as well as senior aides and coordinators, including Tariq Fatemi and Rana Ehsan Afzal, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing this critical issue.
