Pakistan and Bangladesh Move Toward Stronger Maritime Partnership

Pakistan and Bangladesh have taken a significant step toward strengthening regional maritime cooperation following a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Bangladesh’s Shipping Advisor in London. The discussion signaled a renewed commitment from both sides to enhance maritime connectivity, expand commercial engagement and collaborate at global forums.

During the meeting, Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry proposed the establishment of a Pakistan–Bangladesh Shipping Framework designed to formalize and broaden cooperation across key maritime sectors. The framework aims to support joint shipping operations, build structured technical training exchanges and introduce improved maritime safety mechanisms.

The minister emphasized that both countries possess the capacity to contribute meaningfully to global maritime governance. He noted that the collaboration between Islamabad and Dhaka could add a stronger South Asian voice to international maritime policy, particularly at a time when global trade routes and ocean governance structures are evolving rapidly.

Chaudhry also shared that detailed consultations are already underway for a long-term bilateral maritime cooperation plan. This includes joint participation at major international platforms such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where Pakistan is seeking Bangladesh’s support in the upcoming Category C elections.

Highlighting the importance of synergy at maritime bodies, he reiterated that stronger cooperation at the IMO and other regional mechanisms would help both countries protect shared interests and advance maritime security objectives.

The minister offered Karachi Port facilities for Bangladeshi cargo, noting that enhanced port access can deepen commercial connectivity across South and Southeast Asia. He underlined that Pakistan’s strategic location and advanced port infrastructure can serve as a vital regional hub for Bangladeshi trade.

As part of this evolving partnership, Pakistan has proposed launching a Pakistan–Bangladesh Maritime Dialogue. The planned dialogue will cover cooperation in port development, shipping operations, maritime logistics, blue economy opportunities and climate resilience in coastal areas.

“A sustainable maritime partnership can bring stability and prosperity to the region,” Chaudhry stated, expressing confidence that closer collaboration would unlock shared economic potential and contribute to regional stability.

The meeting marks a positive shift in Pakistan–Bangladesh engagement, signaling a pragmatic approach focused on economic development, maritime connectivity and constructive participation in global maritime policy.
