Government Approves 70km Extension of Murree Expressway to Muzaffarabad
The federal government has approved a major infrastructure initiative by extending the Murree Expressway by 70 kilometers to Muzaffarabad. The move is expected to significantly improve road connectivity between Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), making travel safer, faster, and more convenient for residents and visitors alike.
The decision was finalized during a special meeting of the National Highway Authority (NHA), chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan. The project is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize Pakistan’s road network and strengthen regional connectivity through high-quality transport infrastructure.
Once completed, the extended expressway will provide a direct and efficient route between Murree and Muzaffarabad. The project is expected to reduce travel time while improving road safety for commuters who frequently travel between the two regions.
The government believes the initiative will also play a vital role in supporting economic development across Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Better road infrastructure can encourage investment, facilitate trade, and create new business opportunities by improving access to key markets and commercial centers.
Tourism is another sector expected to benefit from the expressway extension. Murree and Muzaffarabad are among Pakistan’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors throughout the year for their scenic landscapes and pleasant weather. Improved road access could encourage more domestic travelers to explore the region while making journeys more comfortable and reliable.
Officials also highlighted that modern transport infrastructure remains a priority for the federal government. Expanding expressways and highways is seen as an important step toward supporting economic growth, enhancing regional integration, and improving public mobility across the country.
The National Highway Authority will oversee the planning and implementation of the project. Further details regarding construction timelines, funding, and execution phases are expected to be announced after the completion of technical assessments and project planning.
The approval of the 70-kilometer Murree Expressway extension reflects the government’s commitment to upgrading Pakistan’s transportation network. Once operational, the project is expected to strengthen connectivity between Murree and Muzaffarabad while contributing to tourism, economic activity, and long-term regional development.
