Pakistan and Bangladesh Pledge to Strengthen Bilateral Relations at CHOGM

High-Level Discussions Held on Pakistan-Bangladesh Cooperation

During the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, engaged in significant diplomatic discussions. One of the key meetings was with Md. Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s Adviser for Foreign Affairs. This was the first official interaction between the two officials since they assumed office, and it set the tone for renewed collaboration and strengthening of bilateral relations.

Fostering Historical and Cultural Ties

Senator Ishaq Dar emphasized the deep-rooted historical, religious, and cultural connections shared by Pakistan and Bangladesh. Both leaders underscored the importance of these ties and expressed a mutual desire to enhance dialogue on economic, cultural, and social fronts. The discussions focused on establishing robust channels for cultural exchanges and fostering people-to-people connections, which are essential for bridging gaps and promoting mutual understanding.

Commitment to Regional Cooperation

The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, with particular attention on trade and commerce. Recognizing the potential for economic growth through increased trade, they explored avenues for expanding market access and collaborative initiatives. They also emphasized the importance of revitalizing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), which plays a crucial role in uniting the South Asian region.

Expanding Diplomatic Outreach with Other Nations

Beyond Bangladesh, Deputy Prime Minister Dar also held talks with the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Sam Matekane. Both expressed satisfaction with the strong diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Lesotho, and committed to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural engagement. Similarly, in a meeting with Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorker Botchwey, both sides agreed to bolster their partnership, especially in trade and education.

The discussions in Samoa underscored Pakistan’s commitment to expanding its global presence and fortifying regional partnerships with like-minded nations, working toward shared prosperity and global cooperation.
