Fielding Woes Haunt Multan Sultans—Umar Akmal Shares His Analysis
Multan Sultans’ PSL 10 Campaign Hits Roadblocks
Multan Sultans’ form in the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League has surprised many, and not in a good way. The team, previously considered a top contender, has yet to register a victory in the tournament. With questions being raised across the cricketing community, former Pakistan batter Umar Akmal has stepped in with a straightforward assessment: poor fielding.
Umar Akmal Points Out Key Weakness
In an interview on a local television network, Akmal dissected the Sultans’ performance and stated that the core issue lies in their inability to hold on to crucial catches.
“They built pressure against Peshawar Zalmi by taking early wickets,” Akmal said. “But fielding mistakes gave Peshawar an opening. Once you drop key catches, it’s hard to pull the game back, especially in T20s.”
Akmal emphasized that despite conceding 200+ runs in two matches, the bowling wasn’t entirely to blame. He asserted that the bowlers did their job by creating opportunities that were simply not capitalized on in the field.
Team Dynamics Affected by Fielding Gaps
Akmal further elaborated on the domino effect of subpar fielding. “When catches are dropped, it puts pressure on the captain, who then has to adjust his entire field strategy. It becomes more about damage control than proactive planning.”
He noted that poor fielding can impact the confidence and rhythm of the bowling unit and cause uncertainty in leadership decisions.
International Experience Should Deliver More
One of the more troubling aspects, according to Akmal, was that some of the worst fielding errors were committed by internationally capped players.
“These are players who have played for Pakistan. Expectations are naturally higher, and they should be setting an example—not letting opportunities slip,” he said.
With a critical home match coming up against Lahore Qalandars, the Sultans have little margin for error if they hope to revive their playoff hopes.
