KP Government Weighs Plan for New International Airport in Peshawar

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is exploring the possibility of building a new international airport in Peshawar while relocating the existing Bacha Khan International Airport to a site outside densely populated areas. The proposal reflects growing concerns over urban congestion and safety around the current airport location.

The initial discussions took place during a meeting chaired by Riaz Khan Mehsud, where officials reviewed early planning considerations for the project. The meeting focused on evaluating land requirements and identifying potential locations suitable for a modern airport facility.

Officials informed participants that approximately 2,500 acres of land would be needed to develop the proposed airport. The new site must meet aviation safety standards while also providing sufficient space for future expansion, infrastructure, and supporting facilities.

Authorities stressed that the new airport should ideally be located away from densely populated areas. Rapid urban expansion in Peshawar has gradually surrounded the current airport, raising concerns about safety, noise pollution, and operational limitations.

The relocation proposal is also being viewed as an opportunity to build a more advanced aviation hub that can accommodate larger aircraft and increasing passenger traffic. With improved infrastructure and modern facilities, the new airport could strengthen regional connectivity and support economic growth in the province.

The existing Bacha Khan International Airport currently serves as a major gateway for travelers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, its proximity to residential neighborhoods has prompted authorities to consider long-term alternatives that better align with modern urban planning principles.

Officials noted that the project remains in the early planning stage, and feasibility studies will be required before any final decisions are made. These studies will evaluate potential locations, environmental considerations, construction costs, and logistical factors.

If approved, the new airport could become one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region. It may also help improve international travel access for residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while supporting tourism, trade, and investment opportunities.

The provincial government is expected to continue consultations with aviation authorities and planning experts to determine the most viable path forward. Further updates are likely once feasibility assessments and land evaluations are completed.
