OGDC Achieves Record-Breaking Oil and Gas Output from Baragzai X-01 Well
Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has marked a historic milestone by commencing production from the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well in the Nashpa Block, located in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The development is being described as the highest-ever oil and gas production from a single well in Pakistan.
The inauguration ceremony took place at OGDC headquarters in Islamabad and was attended by key officials, including Federal Minister for Energy Ali Pervaiz Malik and senior representatives from the Petroleum Division and exploration sector. The event highlighted the strategic importance of the project for the country’s energy landscape.
Initial production figures are highly significant. The well began with an injection of 5,300 barrels of oil per day, 17 million standard cubic feet per day of gas, and 15 metric tons per day of LPG. Cumulative production has already reached 15,000 barrels of oil per day and 45 million cubic feet of gas, with projections indicating an increase to 25,000 barrels of oil and 60 million cubic feet of gas per day in the near future.
This discovery is particularly notable as it taps into five different hydrocarbon-bearing formations, demonstrating the vast resource potential of the Nashpa Block. The Baragzai X-01 well has now become the highest-producing well not only in OGDC’s portfolio but also in the country’s history, contributing approximately 10 percent to Pakistan’s total crude oil output.
The project was executed in a geographically challenging region, requiring advanced technology and efficient operational planning. OGDC successfully installed an 8-kilometer pipeline in record time, along with key infrastructure upgrades for gas processing, crude storage, and integration with existing Mela and Nashpa facilities.
From an economic perspective, the impact is substantial. The well is expected to generate an estimated daily revenue of Rs156 million, translating into Rs4.7 billion monthly and approximately Rs57 billion annually. Additionally, it will help reduce reliance on imported fuel, contributing to foreign exchange savings of around $329 million each year.

Speaking at the event, Ali Pervaiz Malik termed the discovery a monumental achievement for Pakistan’s energy sector. He emphasized the importance of strengthening domestic exploration and production capabilities to enhance energy security and reduce the national import bill.
OGDC’s MD and CEO, Ahmed Hayat Lak, also praised the efforts of the technical teams and field workers who contributed to the success under demanding conditions. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to accelerating exploration activities and expanding production capacity in the future.
The Baragzai X-01 project represents a significant advancement in unlocking Pakistan’s hydrocarbon potential. It reinforces OGDC’s leadership in the upstream sector while supporting broader national goals of economic stability, energy independence, and sustainable resource development.
