Pakistan Celebrates Medical Milestones: First Split Liver and Pancreas Transplants

In a groundbreaking achievement, surgeons at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Center (PKLI) in Lahore have made medical history. They’ve completed the country’s very first split liver transplant and its first-ever pancreas transplant.

Every year in Pakistan, thousands of patients (approximately 8,000) desperately need liver transplants due to liver failure or cancer. This highlights the incredible significance of these lifesaving surgeries.

Dr. Faisal Saud, Dean and CEO of PKLI, explained the remarkable story behind the split liver transplant. Thanks to the selfless donation of a young man, Uzair Bin Yasin, who was declared brain dead in a Rawalpindi hospital, surgeons were able to save multiple lives.

Uzair’s wish was to donate his organs after his death, including his liver, pancreas, kidneys, and eyes. His generous act helped save seven people in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

“We split the liver into two parts, successfully transplanting them into a 33-year-old adult and a young boy facing organ failure,” said Dr. Saud.

Additionally, Uzair’s pancreas was transplanted into a patient with Type-1 diabetes, marking Pakistan’s first pancreatic transplant.
